PoWeR! : Revolutionizing Undergraduate Writing Instruction Through Problem-Based Learning
PoWeR! introduced Problem-Based learning (PBL) to writing instruction in the required freshman Programme in Writing and Reasoning (PWR) course at the Singapore Management University (SMU) in 2017. Within two years, students showed increased engagement and overall satisfaction with both course and instructor quality.
Reimagining writing innovation has been three-fold:
1) using PBL to teach writing,
2) aligning PBL in content and process,
3) introducing a Spiral Curriculum into WR. The Spiral Curriculum imparts key writing concepts, reiterating them spirally to more challenging and complex problems.
The PWR course has been renamed as Writing and Reasoning (WR) in 2019.
